The Elk River from Elk Springs to the Webster/Braxton County line is over 40 miles long and it is classified as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. The river has a variety of whitewater with scenic views at every turn. There are a number of possible day trips and camping is availalbe near the river where you can stay overnight for longer trips. Flows are seasonal and water levels can change rapidly, so be sure to check current levels when planning an outing.
Other area rivers, including the Williams, Gauley, Back Fork of Elk and Holly also provide enjoyable paddling opportunities when the river levels are appropriate. The 55-acre Big Ditch Lake is a great place for exploring and fishing from a canoe.
