The Town of Cowen along with Community Connections, Inc. and artist Bernie Wilke collaborated on “Deeply Rooted”, a colorful depiction of the rich history, exciting present and hopeful future of Cowen. The mural now greets residents and visitors alike as the drive into town from the Nicholas County line from the side of the Gainer Building.
“I think I like the image of the coal miner having lunch with his daughter the best,☺️which was Heather Shifflett’s idea. Also shown is the Bulldog (school mascot), the rail industry, hiking, fishing, biking, the town logo, the strength of the trees that helped build the town (framing the mural), and Butthead the Cat who hangs around the city building. Thanks to many people for helping me with this!!” Bernie wrote on Instagram.
They had over 25 people volunteer their time, talent and ideas to complete the project near the end of 2024. A project that was truly “by the community, for the community”.
And with the instillation of a light, the mural can also be enjoyed after the sun goes down!
