In 2022 the West Virginia Department of Tourism launched the ‘Almost Heaven’ Swing initiated with the installation of 9 swings throughout the state at some of the most scenic locations. The project gained much traction and grew to 32 swings by 2023. The initiative has now gained so much traction that there is a goal to have a swing installed in all 55 counties throughout the state.
Through months of planning, site approval, and logistical planning, the swing was finally installed at the beginning of June 2025.
“This project is a win for both tourism and our local community,” stated Tom Clark, House of Delegate representative for Webster County. The West Virginia Swing at Big Ditch Lake will give people another great reason to visit our county, take in our beautiful landscape, and see firsthand what makes our area so special.”
This exciting development was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Webster County CVB, Webster County EDA, the Town of Cowen and West Virginia Department of Tourism. Their partnership and support have played a key role in turning this vision into a reality.
“We are incredibly grateful to the DNR and WV Tourism for their cooperation and commitment to enhancing outdoor tourism opportunities across the state,” Clark added. “Big Ditch Lake is a hidden gem, and this swing will help shine a light on all it has to offer.”
The West Virginia Swing initiative has become a popular and beloved project, encouraging travelers to visit unique locations across the state, take in scenic views, and capture memorable moments. With Big Ditch Lake now joining the list, even more people will have the chance to enjoy its natural charm.
